The reserves kick off their new season tonight with an away game against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium. Gary Ablett is eager to begin.

"If we go halfway towards achieving what we did last year this season then we will have done really well," the reserve team coach told the club's official website.

"Winning breeds confidence. It improves the level of performance and success is something we want to do as a group.

"It's a fantastic start for us to play at the Riverside Stadium. We are looking forward to it. It's a great setting to go and play your football and one which the boys should want every Saturday. This will give them the chance to taste the big stadium environment.

"Middlesbrough are a very good footballing side. You only have to look at the way their first team played at Anfield last week to know how well they are doing as a club. In saying that, if we put our best foot forward we should be more than a match for anyone.

"We keep telling the young boys we are there to be shot at this season. We are national champions and at a club like Liverpool the aim is always to keep progressing."
