Aldridge: Hillsborough documents must be released

Last updated : 24 August 2011 By John Aldridge, Liverpool Echo

The message to the government is clear – we’re all sick and tired of all the cover ups.

For 22 years we’ve had to put up with it and it’s time the truth finally emerged.

It’s a scandal and it’s clear they are trying to safeguard Margaret Thatcher. We all know what she did to our city and what she thought of football fans in general.

The government needs to stop making excuses and release those documents about the briefings she was given back in 1989 and her Cabinet discussions with Home Secretary Douglas Hurd.

It should have been all out in the open years ago.

For them to drag their heels at such a late stage only adds to the feeling that there’s something in those documents they want to hide.

For too long people in authority have looked after themselves by pinning the blame on others.

The families of the 96 who died have been inspirational over the years. Obstacles have been put in their way but they have kept on fighting and they have been so dignified.

Now it’s time the government started to show some dignity as well.

If you haven’t signed the petition yet please do it. We have got past the 100,000 mark but the more people who sign it, the better.

Every football supporter no matter who you follow should sign up.

It’s about putting pressure on to ensure that finally we get some justice for fans who went to watch a match and didn’t come back.
