Alonso bidding for Bolton start

The 22-year-old Spanish international midfielder wasn't signed in time to make his debut in the lacklustre Champions League clash with AK Graz, but he is determined to prove his worth to the Anfield faithful as soon as possible.

He said: "I want to play at Bolton but that's the manager's decision. I haven't spoken to him about it yet. We had a game last night and trained again today. I'm sure we'll talk about the Bolton game and the team later in the week."

"I know there's a gap between us and the top three but I believe we can challenge for the title this season. I don't want to talk about my own game and what I can do but I believe I can help the side.

"I have watched Steven Gerrard in the last two games at Anfield and he is a very good player. I think we can form a good partnership for the team if that's what the manager wants.

"I am enjoying being at Liverpool. As soon as I knew they were interested I wanted to come here because it's a big club with a great history. Anfield is a special place, the supporters are great and I can't wait to start playing."
