Spain face France in Hanover this evening with a place in the World Cup quarter finals at stake. Alonso admits it will be a tough game but he believes Spain have shown in the group stage they're capable of beating the French.

"The atmosphere is always better when you are performing well and winning games," said the Liverpool midfielder.

"But we know it's a tough competition so we have to focus and concentrate. We want to go as far as possible.

"It was boost winning the first two games because we reached the knock-out stage. That's what we wanted, now we have rested some players, and at the same time confidence in the team is high.

"I think we have the talent and the players. Obviously in the last few tournaments we have not been able to reach the final or even the semi-finals. Now we are desperate to get there and I think, with the preparations we have made, it is entirely possible that we can achieve big things."
