Liverpool play Marseille in the Stade Velodrome tonight in their opening group stage game of the Champions League. Last season the Reds won 4-0 in the South of France and although Xabi Alonso is expecting a much tougher game this time around he is still confident of getting a good result.

"We know it will be a tough game for us because Marseille are a good side and they are playing well at the moment," said the midfielder.

"Last season we had a good result there. But they also had a good result at Anfield.

"We will go there with confidence that we can get a result again this time.

"We will be looking to win the game because we know how important it can be to get three points on the board from your first game.

"If we do that then it makes things a little bit easier for us because we will have more confidence."
