Alonso: Fulham win can kick-start our season

The Reds had only picked up one point out of a possible twelve on their travels before the weekend and their poor run looked set to continue before Alonso's introduction.

45 minutes from Alonso and the Reds had overturned a two goal defecit to pick up their first away win of the campaign- a win that Alonso believes can inspire Liverpool onto greater things.

"It was an incredible result for us and hopefully it will have a big impact on our season," says Alonso. "I don't think we played too badly in the first half but we made it very difficult for ourselves by making two mistakes and we were punished twice.

"We started the second half in just the same way as the first but getting that goal so early changed everything. Hopefully, that first goal, the deflection, can change the whole atmosphere at the club.

"It was a bit of good fortune but it gave us a lot of confidence to go on and win the game with a lot of goals. And with this being our first away win of the season it could prove very important.

"I hope this win gives us the confidence to lift our season but it is too early to say for sure. Now we need to forget about this game and improve against Deportivo.

"That will be a big night for us at Anfield, and Deportivo will be really motivated for it because it could be their last chance to qualify from the group stages."
