Xabi Alonso scored Spain's opener in their 4-0 victory over the Ukraine in Leipzig yesterday. Alonso headed home after 13 minutes to set Spain on their way with his first ever goal for his country.

Alonso scored his first goal for Spain in his 26th international match and afterwards said Spain could have a real impact at this World Cup.

"We've had some great teams in the past and they lacked a little luck or something was always missing. But I don't see any reason why we can't make a big run in this tournament. Why not this year?" asked the Liverpool midfielder.

"I think we have the talent and the players. Obviously in the last few tournaments we have not been able to reach the final.

"Now we're desperate to get there and I think with the preperations we have made it is entirely possible that this time we can achieve big things."
