Alonso hoping for early progress

A win against Athletico Madrid tonight will see Liverpool within touching distance of the knockout stages of the Champions League. Xabi Alonso is hoping the Reds can do just that.

"It's important not to lose this game. We know if we can come away with something then they still have to come to Anfield and that will give us a great chance to take at least four points from the two games," said the midfielder.

"It will be a tough match, though, because Atletico are a very offensive side with lots of attacking players. We know that if we can control the game and make sure we don't let them enjoy themselves with lots of possession, then we will have chances to win.

"Last season at this stage it was almost a dead or alive situation for us because we had made a bad start in the group, but this year it is completely different.

"If we can get the points we need to go through as soon as possible it will be good for the manager to get the chance to rest players for important Premier League games."
