Liverpool will attempt to sign the Argentinian midfielder from West Ham today after FIFA gave him permission to sign for the Reds this season. As a holding midfielder he would challenge Xabi Alonso for a first team place, but Alonso welcomes the competiton.

"Tevez and Mascherano are two good players. However, they are not playing that many games. It is hard to adapt to life in the Premiership, it is a different kind of football here to what they will have played before," the Basque told website icons.com.

"I am aware that Mascherano has been linked with Liverpool and I'm sure he would be able to make a very interesting contribution. If the boss feels that his inclusion would benefit the team, he would be warmly welcomed."
