Alonso maintains the momentum

"I don't think the rest we had during that time helped us a lot," said the Spanish playmaker.

"We are a team that needs momentum, we need fluidity in the way we play and the more matches we play the better our tempo is.

"It was good to have a quiet week after the festive period because it allowed us to rest our legs and get over the knocks and things that you get playing so many games in a short space of time.

"But I didn't want any longer off. A lot of people think that the calendar can be too congested sometimes but everyone can have an opinion.

"For me, though, if we could play every weekend and every midweek between now and the end of the season then we would do very well."
