Liverpool were hoping to sell Alonso to Juventus for £16m but that transfer now looks unlikely after the Italian side yesterday spent £7.8m on Sevilla's Christian Poulsen.
Rafael Benitez has said he would be happy to keep Alonso at Anfield but if he stays it will hinder the bids for Gareth Barry and Robbie Keane.
