The midfielder has failed to recover from the assault by Joey Barton last week and has not travelled with the squad to London for today's match with West Ham. Javier Mascherano and Fernando Torres have recovered from their respective injuries however.
"Xabi is not fit and cannot play. We think maybe in the next week he will be okay. We had an idea that he could be fit for this game but in the end it was impossible," said Rafael Benitez.
"Javier was training and is in the squad, and so is Fernando."
