Alonso ready for World Cup

Alonso is keen for the World Cup to begin and is confident that this time Spain can have a real crack at the tournament.

"I'm getting very excited about the World Cup. It's a chance to play in something I have only been able to see on television before," said the Basque.

"I'm looking forward to it immensely. I wouldn't like to make a prediction about how far Spain will go, but I think football fans should have faith in us.

"I think we're all hoping this is our chance and we can achieve what everyone expects us to. In recent World Cups, more was expected of us. I think it would be fantastic to go a long way, but it is up to us - the players - who are going to be in the form we have been showing for our clubs.

"If we take things one step at a time, start playing well from the off and believe in ourselves, I think we can beat anyone.

"That's what the World Cup is about. You only have a few games, so you have to be confident, have a game plan and hopefully you'll reach the final.

"On the face of it, Spain have been handed a relatively easy draw but you have to respect everyone. For Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Ukraine to even be at the World Cup they have to have earned it, although we're optimistic and we're certainly not complaining about the draw.

"We know a lot about the Ukraine because we played them in qualification for the last European Championships. They're a strong team who are very impressive physically and of course they have Andriy Shevchenko up front, who's a fantastic player.

"Although the group looks good, things could get complicated after that. If we finish runners-up then there's a good chance of us getting France in the next round, and if we win our group we would be on target for Brazil in the quarter-finals."
