Alonso up for the cup

Liverpool were accused of disrespecting the FA Cup last season when a scratch side was beaten by Burnley in the third round. That defeat served to show the likes of Alonso just how important the FA Cup is in this country and now the Basque wants to bring the famous old trophy back to Anfield.

"That came as a real shock to me, not just losing but the reaction to it," admitted Alonso.

"When we lost, I did not fully appreciate how important the Cup was and how much it meant to people.

"I knew about its reputation because I used to follow it back home in Spain and watch the semi-finals and the final at Wembley. You could tell it was a bit special from that, but how special only sunk in after that defeat at Burnley.

"People round the city kept saying, 'this is the FA Cup. There's no way you should have lost that game. It's not just done for Liverpool to go out at the first hurdle'. I was really surprised by the depth of feeling, but at least I can promise our fans we'll do our utmost to ensure there's no repeat. Now we're fully committed to winning the Cup, if we can.

"For me, the best way of forgetting what happened at Burnley would be to take our fans as far as we can this time."
