Alonso will not be replaced

With Alonso out for six weeks and Biscan and Diao free to leave this month it would be understandable if Rafael Benitez sought to buy a replacement for the Spaniard. However, the boss is doing no such thing.

"Losing Xabi Alonso will not change my thinking in the transfer market. We have a lot of midfield players to cover but I must discover who is fit," says Benitez.

"We will be looking for new players now because it is important we have a competitive squad.

"Our priority at this present moment is Norwich, but after that we must find the players we need."

Both Jon Welsh and Darren Potter have been called into the squad for the Norwich game.
