The French international made Liverpool's task that much harder by scoring twice for current club Manchester City in their impressive 2-1 success at Anfield. Anelka insists that he harbours no ill-will towards the club and hopes they do reach the top four.

Anelka said: "I don't think they have got a problem because I really think they will beat Chelsea next week. Liverpool have quality in their side, they have big players who can play in the big games. My goal doesn't really change anything as they had to go and win at Chelsea anyway and I think they can do that.

"What did I feel when I scored? Nothing really. I was just happy to score. I haven't scored that many recently, so to score at Anfield made me very happy. I got great satisfaction, but not because it was against Liverpool. In the last few weeks I haven't played like I should. Of course it was enjoyable. Obviously, I used to play here and the fans gave me a good reception. They showed me that they liked what I did for them."
