Nicolas Anelka has taken another swipe at Gerard Houllier by claiming the Liverpool manager went back on his word regarding signing him.

"I wanted to stay at Liverpool," said the Man City striker. "You had better ask Gerard Houllier why I had to leave.

"I had found in Anfield what I was looking for - the atmosphere and fitting style of play.

"Gerard Houllier was not going to keep me, although he had said the contrary."

While people speculate as to why the boss decided not so sign such a quality player on the cheap, Insider members remain privy to certain claims and rumours as to why the deal didn't proceed (see the archive!).
