Anelka still hopes to become a Red

Anelka is set to leave Fenerbache to join Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth but the French striker admits his ideal move would be a return to Anfield where he spent six happy months on loan in 2002.

"Even though I'm out in Turkey, I thought more big clubs would want me," said Anelka.

"I have kept out of trouble and also got back into the French squad after some good performances in the Champions League.

"People keep criticising my so-called personality or they say I'm always changing clubs. It's completely false.

"My priority would be to join a club that plays regularly in the Champions League but I can't do anything if those clubs don't want to sign me.

"It is the same for Bolton or Blackburn, from whom I had phone calls from the managers.

"Portsmouth is the only club to have made a concrete offer to Fenerbahce.

"I think it is an £8.2 million offer. I had talks with Harry Redknapp. He knows me well.

"If I was to go to a club like Portsmouth, I would go willing to give my best.

"But Liverpool is the best club I've ever been at.

"If everything had gone as I'd wished, I'd have signed a five-year contract then and today I'd have been negotiating an extension."
