Anfield legend hails Gerrard signing

The former Coventry City manager, who claimed four European Cup winners medal and eight league championships wearing the famous Red of Liverpool, believes that star striker Michael Owen could be persuaded to keep faith with the Anfield cause now that his talimanic skipper has agreed to stay on Merseyside.

"It is a big, big sign that everything isn't as bad as people make out. It's imperative that Steven Gerrard, who is arguably going to captain Liverpool for years to come, signed a new contract. I think it's a good step forward for the club," enthused Neale.

"He's the driving force and it's a great start for Gerard Houllier and his plans for the future of Liverpool Football Club. Steven is as important as Graeme Souness was and his old mate Michael Owen will now have to stop and think what his future is as well.

"With the skipper doing the right, honourable thing I'm sure it's the right way forward for the club. It will now be interesting to see what Houllier does when the transfer window opens in Janury and what support he has from the club and what, if any additions, come in.

"It looks like they'll have to fight very hard to achieve that fourth place and it will be interesting to see what he has up his sleeve."

How much of a relief is this news?
