Anfield legend undergoes brain op

Hughes, who was affectionately dubbed 'crazy horse' during his time at Anfield, was admitted to Sheffield's Royal Hallamshire Hospital on Monday, where he was operated on just a day later.

The former England international is, according to a statement released by Liverpool Football Club, expected to make a full recovery from his illness and is now convalescing in his Rotherham home.

A statement released by Liverpool said: "Everyone at Liverpool wishes Emlyn a speedy recovery from his recent illness, and we send our support to Emlyn, Barbara and family during this difficult time.

"Emlyn is a legend to Liverpool supporters all over the world and was renowned for his battling spirit and determination to win, qualities that will be invaluable during his recovery period.

"Within the next couple of weeks, when Emlyn is feeling stronger, further treatment of radiotherapy will begin.

"Emlyn and his family wish to express their immense thanks to all of the medical team who performed the operation and have cared for him so well.''
