Another Arsenal draw

Yesterday's league game at the Emirates was the third 1-1 draw of the season between Liverpool and Arsenal following the earlier league game at Anfield and Wednesday's Champions League game in London.

The Reds earned their first away point against Arsenal under Rafael Benitez thanks to Peter Crouch's fine opener but will have been disappointed they didn't take all three.

Liverpool started the game brightly and almost took an early lead; Crouch tried his luck from 40 yards and his fine shot was bound for the top corner until Manuel Almunia palmed it over the bar.

Crouch turned provider on 18 minutes, playing in John Arne Riise, but with only the goalkeeper to beat Riise skied his shot over the bar.

Debut boy Damien Plessis, who gave an assured display in the centre of midfield, was next to try his luck. Lucas laid the ball off to his midfield partner but Plessis' shot went over the bar.

Lucas and Crouch then combined to play in Yossi Benayoun but again the Reds failed to get a chance on target.

After half an hour that was all Liverpool, Arsenal finally came to life. Bendtner was left in space on the edge of the 18 yard box but his feeble shot was straight at Pepe Reina. Eboue then played in Fabregas in the six yard box but before the midfielder could shoot Steve Finnan slid in with a fantastic tackle to put the ball out for a corner.

It was during Arsenal's best period of play in the first half that Liverpool took the lead. Reina cleared the ball upfield to Peter Crouch who exchanged passes with Benayoun before beating Almunia with a low drive into the bottom corner.

Arsenal needed a win to stay in the title race and really stepped it up after the break. They got an equaliser after 54 minutes after Jermaine Pennant foolishly gave away a free kick on the left touchline. Bendtner outjumped Crouch to head home the inswinging cross.

Arsenal kept putting Liverpool under pressure but the best chance of a winner came the Reds way. Crouch played in subsitute Andriy Voronin on the edge of the area but with only Almunia to beat, the Ukrainian put the ball high and wide.
