The Socceroos drew 1-1 with Japan in the quarter final but were then beaten 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out. Liverpool winger Harry Kewell set up Australia's goal but had his penalty saved in the shoot out. West Ham mercenary Lucas Neill also missed from the spot.
