Babbel was substitued during half time at the Reebok Stadium after compaining of tiredness in September of last year, and was subsequently diagnosed with the potentially fatal Guillan Barre Syndrome.

But now, after more than a year of recuperation, it seems that the fullback is available for selection should he be called upon.

"I can honestly say I finally feel a hundred per cent. I've been through some terrible times which have put a strain on myself, my family and the club. But I really believe now I'm read for the first team.

"I have played plenty of reserve games and performed well. My fitness is good and I feel I'm playing well.

"It has been a long time but I really believe now I can make the step up. All the coaching staff are happy and the medical people, who have treated me, are also very pleased with my progress.

"The manager has stood by me all the way along, he has been fantastic to me. Now I hope I can repay his belief. I just want to play for Liverpool and I can say now I'm as good as ever."

Babbel was on the bench for yesterday's 1-0 win at Elland Road.
