The German defender has been regaining match fitness in the reserves and completed a full 90 minutes against Sheffield Wednesday on Monday.
With Stephane Henchoz ruled out for five weeks Babbel will be hoping to get a chance to prove that he has not lost the outstanding form that he showed in the treble-winning season.
