Birmingham City have had an offer for the Dutch forward, reportedly in the region of £8million, rejected by Liverpool.
"We received the offer," admitted Benitez. "We were talking with the player. The player told us that he wants to stay. So for us he has rejected the offer and we are just waiting.
"I didn't say that the player had to go. He's working with us and I'm pleased with how he works, so that's it.
"I think he's a good player and if he keeps working hard we will keep him if necessary, no problem. If he wants to go we have to analyse it carefully but for me he could be a good player.
"We will try to keep working with him and he has to try to do the best for us."
