Back to the Bay Arena

The Reds went to the Bay Arena with a 1-0 lead from the first leg but were soon 1-0 down. However, an Abel Xavier equaliser before half time meant that Leverkusen had to beat the Reds by two clear goals to progress. Score them they did to the dismay of the thousands of Liverpool fans who made the trip.

Since that game Leverkusen knocked out Manchester United in the semi-finals to reach their only European Cup final were they were beaten by Real Madrid.

After selling all their best players, including the brilliant Michael Ballack, Leverkusen struggled in the league, only just avoiding relegation in 2003. However, the German team have returned to form once again and in making the last sixteen topped a group which included Real Madrid and Roma.
