Barry on-off deal back on

Having insisted that Liverpool's time was up and that Gareth Barry was happy to stay at Villa, Martin O'Neill has now backtracked.

Rafael Benitez is now prepared to pay the £18 million asking price after being given the green light by owner Tom Hicks, and Barry and his agent are now requesting to go.
O'Neill and Villa owner Randy Lerner have now conceded defeat in the tug-of-war and now await a formal offer for the England international.

"I gave it some thought and realised there is little point in pretending," said O'Neill between gritted teeth. "Gareth would want to join Liverpool and therefore there would be no deadline. I have agreed with Gareth now.

"That's it, no problem. Liverpool have all the time in the world to do it if they want to raise the money."
