Barton hoping to give Reds the Blues

The tough-tackling England under-21 midfielder has won rave reviews since bursting onto the Premiership scene at the end of last season and he is desperate to prove his worth before a capacity Anfield crowd.

Barton said: "I still live in Liverpool. I'm a real homely person and I didn't fancy the move to Manchester. A lot of my mates are Liverpool fans who go and watch them everywhere. There's a bit of rivalry between us but it adds a bit more to the game rather than the usual run of the mil football match.

"I was at Everton with Jon Otsemobor before the club disbanded our age group and we all had to look elsewhere. I would never have left Everton as Everton is my club, but I moved to City and I think it's the best thing that ever happened to me.

"I haven't really done anything in the game. I haven't made an imprint on the game yet. My goals for the next few seasons are to make inroads into the Premiership and into the England set-up if I can."
