Houllier accused the German of having a 'bad attitude'and admitted that he felt let down by the 30-year-old defender. Babbel, though, insists that he was not aware of any rift between himself and the manager.

Babbel, speaking in the Mail, said: "I don't understand why the manager has been saying negative things about me.

"After he was so pleased to sign me from Bayern Munich and after we won so many trophies together in my debut season, it seems unlikely he could change his opinion of me.

"When I had my illness it was roughly at the same time that he had his serious heart problems. He was an inspiration to me.

"I want to regain my position at the club. It has been frustrating playing in the reserves, powerless to help as we failed to qualify for the Champions League.

"It seems I have fallen out of favour for some reason which is unknown to me. I am fully match fit, in good form and ready to give everything for Liverpool."
