Benitez backs players to show mental strength

The Reds face a difficult game away at Newcastle this afternoon but Benitez is confident his team will have put Sunday's game out of their minds and will be determined to make amends against the Geordies.

"Everton are eight points ahead of us at the moment and they have been very consistent but nothing is impossible in football and we must keep fighting and keep our heads up until the end of the season," said Benitez.

"All the players have had two days off this week with their families and I think that is the best way for us to get our confidence back. We know how important every game between now and the end of the season will be and we know we have the right mentality.

"The Carling Cup is over now and the only thing we can do now is work hard for the future. We must concentrate on each game as it comes and our next challenge is Newcastle in the Premiership on Saturday. That is all we are thinking about right now.

"Like ourselves, they have been a bit inconsistent this season but it should be a good game, I've been told that they normally are. Hopefully it will, but more important is that we win."
