"They were playing with five at the back," he said of the Dutch side. "It was difficult but at least we were winning and the second goal from Keane was really good for us, for him and for everyone. In the second half we knew we had to play counter attack to score but we scored from a free kick.

"I think that they had a planned to defend and play counter attack but we scored the first goal. Only in the second half did they change and play more offensive so we had more options in counter attack."

Robbie Keane's first goal for the club was a big relief to his boss.

"Hopefully it will be one of a lot," he added. "He was working so hard that he deserved to score and now you can talk about when he will score in the Premier League but at least he's scored his first goal for us and it was really important for him." Captain Steven Gerrard also netted an important goal - his 100th for the club.

"Going forward he's one of the best midfielders in the world so I think that today 100 goals means that he can score more, maybe 200, I don't know," added the boss. "But to get three points today was the most important thing.

"It's important to keep concentrating in every game, so now we can approach the game against City. We have four days between these two games so we can keep the players focused. They are on fire and we have time to use the same players."
