Malaga have confirmed that Benitez has asked about defensive midfielder Miguel Angel who he sees as foil for Steven Gerrard.
"They have asked about his situation, but there has not been an economic offer," said Manuel Ruiz Hierro, Malaga technical secretary.
"Rafael Benitez knows the player well."
