Berger hungry for new challenge

Though the 29-year-old admits that he leaves Anfield with no small amount of regret and sadness, he knows that the Fratton Park club will offer him the challenge his flagging career so desperately needs.

Berger said: "Well, you know it's part of the game. I've been here seven years and had a great time at Liverpool. My daughter was born here and we've won a lot of trophies in that period.

"I would love to stay here but that's not to be the case so I have to move on. I'm looking forward to the new challenge."
