The 29-year-old, who looks set to leave Anfield on a free transfer in the summer, showed signs of his best form in his first outing for the Reds in 2003.

McAuley said: "That was Paddy's first game for over four months and he will be pleased to get that game under his belt.

"He is a good athlete which he showed in the game. He played for most of the game and will be pleased with his contribution. He produced an excellent run and showed great vision to play in Neil Mellor for our second goal. Paddy is an excellent footballer."
