Bergkamp: Anelka can be one of world's best

Bergkamp thinks the signing is a risk worth taking for Gerard Houllier and that an Anelka and Owen partnership will 'send shivers down the spine of every Premiership club' if they can create an understanding.

Speaking on his personal website, Bergkamp says: "I feel Nicolas Anelka proved at Arsenal what he is capable of. He won the Double with us in 1998 and also starred throughout the following year. I don't feel he ever reached those heights during his time in Spain and France, so it'll be interesting to see how he fares at Liverpool.

"I feel that the signing of Nicolas does constitute a risk for Gerard Houllier – but it's a risk well worth taking. The thought of Michael Owen and Nicolas Anelka forming a partnership should send shivers down the spine of every Premiership defender. The pace in that partnership will be lethal and they can both take their chances as well.

"How much of a success Nicolas makes of his time at Liverpool is quite simply down to him. He should ask himself how much he wants it because that's the key with a player such as Nicolas. If he applies himself, he could become the key striker in the Premiership and on the world stage. He's still young and can go all the way, if he gets a full campaign under his belt.

"Rumours that the players at Arsenal disliked Nicolas when he was at Highbury are quite simply untrue. He never caused any disruption or ill-feeling in the dressing room. He was just a normal kid who was a little bit quiet.

"As for the problems he's had with controversial headlines in the press, well I feel that was more to do with the people around him speaking rather than him. No, Nicolas is a good guy."
