Bitterness has gone

After over 30 years with the club Evans called it a day in November 1998, leaving Gerard Houllier in sole charge of team affairs.

"Any jealousy is gone," he told the Liverpool Echo. "If I wanted to be jealous the season won the treble was the one, but I had my time.

"Looking back, '97 was our best chance. Immaturity let us down. Macca and Robbie were of a similar age and they gave their all - they cared and wanted success, nobody should doubt that.

"But if we could have had more time with the experience of John Barnes, who was a steadying influence it would have helped.

"We could go forward for fun but couldn't get the defensive thing right. We tried everywhere and coul;dn't get that player - Desaiily, Kohler and Blanc. We tried for them at their best but we couldn't get them to come."

Evans now believes that Liverpool are in a position to challenge for the Premiership, and Houllier has built a team worthy of the title.

"I hope they do it. I will be pleased for the club, pleased for Gerard. It is still my club at the end of the day."
