The tough-tackling midfield general has carried Gerard Houllier's men to the brink of Champions League qualification with a season packed with Man-of-the-Match displays.

As former Manchester United stalwart Bruce prepares to face the Liverpool star, he is quick to admit that the 23-year-old would improve any team with his brand of attacking skills and hard-working endevour.

Bruce said: "When you talk about the best footballers in the country. You can't leave Steven Gerrard out of that group. Liverpool are a better team when he is playing and England are better when he's in the side. You can put him in any team in the country and he'd make them better."
