The Reds boss is fully aware that his side have an opportunity to close the gap on the sides immediately above them by defeating Bolton at Anfield.

He said: "This is a game in hand for us and we are aware of that. This weekend was the ideal time for us to play the game because both sides are out of the FA Cup.

"We have ten games to go and we will do our best to get enough points to get into the top four. This game is an important one for our season. It could be pivotal.

"Last weekend was good for us because we beat a great side in the Cup final but we won't suffer from complacency because of that. We always respect our opponents and tomorrow will be no different."

Victory against Bolton, Houllier is aware, cannot be taken for granted. The Reds have not won a league game at Anfield for over four months. The Frenchman knows that this barren run must be brought to an end tomorrow

Houllier said: "I think we have been a bit unlucky and maybe a bit short of confidence on some occasions. Hopefully we can start putting that record right this weekend."
