Bolton hoping to keep Diouf

Diouf was signed by Gerard Houllier for £10m but has been a flop at Anfield and was shipped out to the Reebok stadium immediately by Rafael Benitez. However, Diouf has been something of a success for Bolton who now hope to sign him permanently.

"I think he wants to stay and we want him to stay," said Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside. "Now it's a question of trying to get the right financial deal with Liverpool.

"We know what Diouf's aspirations are and, although he might not get exactly what he wants, we know where we are going.

"But we've got to do a financial deal with Liverpool that's got to suit both clubs and we are going to try to do that this summer.

"When we took him on loan, we were talking about the possibility of keeping him. Now we've got to try and find some way of getting a compromise, and we have talked about that.

"If he hadn't been successful here, we wouldn't have been wanting to buy him. It's as simple as that.

"You can't have one without the other. By being successful, he's giving us a problem, but it's a nice problem.

"He's not been very successful in English football up to this point, but we are trying to revive his career and trying to benefit from a situation where he will improve with us."
