Gerrard has struggled for consistency this season, which the manager puts down to the constant speculation over his future.

"We read and hear something different about Steven Gerrard every week," he said.

"I've spoken to him and I know he wants to do the best for the club, but it's not easy. He is a youngster. He's been here all his life and now he's hearing people around him talking about going somewhere else to win trophies. It can't be easy for him to stay focused.

"We're trying to help so that we see the Steven Gerrard we know. The Stevie we saw at the start of the season. That's what we need."

Gerrard could end all the speculation by pledging his future to Liverpool and publicly denouncing Chelsea's attempts to tap him up of course.
