Boss: Owen is our penalty taker

Gerard Houllier insists Michael Owen will continue to take any penalties that are awarded during a game despite his recent lack of success.

Although we can't understand what all the fuss is about, fans continue to droan on about St Mike's "penalty crisis".

"I have spoken to Michael about the penalty situation this week," said the boss.

"He said he would understand if I took him off penalties but I said no.

"He needs the next penalty and he will take it unless he is tripped for it. I don't like the player who is fouled to get up and take the penalty as a rule, not just for Michael Owen.

"It happened against West Brom and I should really have sent out that message then. If a player is fouled to win the penalty he can take a knock or have it playing on his mind, so I prefer someone else to take it."
