The combatitive midfield star was close to sealing a controversial £8m switch to Liverpool in the summer of 2002 before contracted wage negotiations saw the club pull out of the transfer.

The 27-year-old went on to endure a difficult spell at West Ham upon leaving debt-ridden Leeds and has struggled to impress at St James' Park until a recent upsurge in form.

Bowyer said: "Yes, I know I will get the treatment from the Liverpool fans. But I get that wherever I go. I'm used to it by now."
