Bruce fears Owen backlash

Owen has scored just once in his last fourteen Premiership appearances for the Reds, a run which is already the worst of his sparkling career. The Birmingham boss, though, still rates the Liverpool striker as the best forward in England.

Bruce said: “The sort of run Michael has had happens to everybody, no matter who you are, if you play in that striking position. There is going to be a time when the chances just don’t go in for you.

“It is possibly the first time in his short career that Michael, who I believe is still England’s premier striker, has not been as prolific compared to the high standards he has set himself.

“I sincerely hope we don’t get the backlash because he is still getting into the positions to score and the great thing about him – and Gary Lineker previously – is that he is never frightened to miss.”
