With England's bid for Euro 2004 glory fast approaching, Bruce hopes that the 23-year-old Anfield captain can maintain his blistering form for the national side in Portugal.
Bruce said: We just could not cope with him. I hope he continues that form for the next few weeks in the European Championships. He was awesome - absolutely awesome. He did everything that is required of a midfield player.
"Gerrard looks a supreme athlete. He is quick, he gets in tackles, he is the complete player at the moment. By all accounts he has been like that for the best part of the season."
