Fans and club officials of both sides were unhappy with the decision which was taken at such a late stage, but referee Clattenburg said he couldn't allow the match to go ahead due to fears over player safety.

He said: "When I arrived two and a half hours earlier, I felt it had a 90 per cent chance of going ahead. There was a major problem in front of the stand though and we had to clear the water off the far side of the pitch with the machines."

"The machine was plugged though and couldn't collect any more water and that meant that there was a problem in that area. I have to think of the players' safety first and they wouldn't have been safe on that side," he added.
