Liverpool totally outplayed Juventus in the first half and took a deserved 2-0 lead. After the break however, Juventus started to show the form that has seen them lead Serie A and they were able to score a vital away goal to the delight of their manager.

"In that first half we just didn't play, we didn't get started. The doubts I had before the game about not having played on Saturday and not being sharp enough were well founded," said Capello.

"We were not fast enough, and we were lucky that Liverpool had only three chances and scored just two goals.

"But I was delighted with the reaction of my team after the interval. We were more aggressive and faster all over the pitch.

"After being 2-0 down of course I am happy with the outcome. I am very satisfied with the way we came back in the second period.

"And now I have faith in my team and trust them to win the second leg and go through into the semi-finals.

"I brought Pessotto as a tactical change, I wanted someone to stay in one position and stop the flow of attacks to allow others to go forward, and it worked.

"We all suffered in that first half, but when we did get the ball and attack in that second period, we caused them a lot of problems which gives me great confidence for the second game.

"I expected Liverpool to play with two forwards, but we allowed them to take far too much control and we just did not get started in the match.

"But I accept that we saw two excellent teams and Liverpool certainly played well. But I accept that at 2-0 down it was a very difficult task for us and I feared for the future, but at the break I impressed on the team that they could score and I felt we were also going to get the equaliser after we did managed to find the net."
