The Reds captain added that he was pleased with the team ethic which gave the Reds the edge.
"We managed to get the breakthrough with my goal and we went on and claimed the three points. It was a good team performance today," he said.
Gerrard added, "It was a difficult game against a physical side. I thought Man City defended really well and didn't give much away.
"I am more pleased with the three points because we have another home game on Wednesday and if we can do that against Portsmouth we can perhaps find ourselves in a better position in the league," he concluded.
