The Liverpool captain, speaking in Arnhem ahead of tonight's UEFA Cup clash with Vitesse, believes Traore has all the makings of a quality defender.
"Me and Stephane Henchoz have a very good partnership," said Hyypia. "We know each others game.
"But Djimi Traore has played tremendously well since coming into the team. He is still very young and a different type of player to Stephane.
"When I first saw Djimi three years ago I thought that he had good assets to be a top quality centre half and he is now showing that."
