Sources in Italy have said the player was watched by members of Rafa Benitez's scouting team, during Palermo's Uefa Cup tie with Eintracht Frankfurt last week.
The player is currently fighting for his place in the side, despite scoring nine goals last season and being capped by World Champions, Italy. The 25 year old is reportedly attracting interest from a host of top European sides, including Celtic, Barca and Arsenal.
It is thought he may be available for transfer during the January transfer window.
