A 1-0 win over Olympiakos would guarantee progression in the competition and the Liverpool defender is confident they can achieve that.

"The draw for the Champions League will be at the end of the week and we are desperate to be in it," he said.

"At the start of the group we'd have settled for having to win our last game at home to get through. We have to make sure we get that win, because a club like Liverpool with its name and history has to be in the Champions League.

"We're always confident, especially at home where our record this season has been very good," he said.

"We are building up a bit of momentum now. It was all doom and gloom a few weeks ago with all the injuries, but we've shown a lot of character to come through that, and in the last three games we have done well.

"We've done well in the cup competitions in the past. Our main aim this year is to make sure we get into the Champions League again.

"We're not saying we can win the championship this year, so our best way of winning a trophy is in the cup competitions because the aim of the team at the start of every season is to win silverware."
